How to Measure for Venetian Blinds
Things to Remember:
Use a steel tape for accuracy
Measure Width and write it down, then Length and write it down
Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch
Do not take your own deductions. The factory will take necessary deductions and
allowances.
Double check all measurements
NOTE: All measurements should come from measuring the window. If you
measure your existing blinds, the measurements will be incorrect.
- Measuring Basics
• Always use a steel tape measure, preferably 3/4" to 1" wide.
• Measure the width first, then the height. Width is listed first when
you order the win dow covering, so it's a good habit to measure it first
to help prevent transposing the two measurements.
• Record all measurements immediately after you make them. Don't rely on
memory.
• Measure each window separately, even if they appear to be the same
size.
• Examine the window opening for potential trouble spots, such as
protruding window cranks or handles.
- Measuring for Inside Mounts
• Make three measurements for each dimension.
• Measure the window opening width at the top, center, and bottom.
Measure the window opening height at the left, center, and right.
• Record the smallest width and height measurements, rounding down to
the nearest 1/8".
• Measure the window opening on the diagonals. If the two diagonal
dimensions are not exactly the same, you may wish to specify an outside
mount for optimal privacy and light control.
- Inside Mounting Depth
• Check shade specifications for the minimum inside mounting depth
required. If the window covering cannot be fully recessed, please be
aware that a certain portion will protrude outside the window opening.
Remember to add any extra amount required to clear obstructions such as
window latches or cranks to the minimum mounting depth.
- Measuring for Outside Mounts

• Measure the desired width and height at the center of the window
opening.
• Allow for the recommended overlap for the specific window covering
being ordered to minimize light gaps.
• If the window has molding around it and you are not mounting onto the
molding, be sure your height measurement allows for the mounting of the
shade above the molding.
• When recording your measurements, round them to the nearest 1/8".
- General
Measure window accurately and remember that all windows are not
perfectly square.
For custom ordered product, you will need to order your blind or shade
specifically as an inside mount or outside mount.
How to Measure for Vertical Blinds
Inside Mount
Installation
To find width:
Measure the opening across the top where the headrail is to be
installed from inside of
jamb on left to inside of jamb on right. Record the exact
measurement to 1/8"
To find length:
Measure from the inside top of the opening on the left, at the
center and on the right
to the sill; record the measurement to the nearest 1/8" . Do not
make any allowances:
the factory will make all adjustments so the headrail will fit the
opening properly and the
vanes will clear the sill by 1/4" to 1/2".
Outside Mount Installation
To find width:
Measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the
headrail will be
installed to the nearest 1/8". Blind should overlap opening at least
4" on each side to
ensure privacy.
To find length:
Measure the length of the area to be covered and record to the
nearest 1/8". Blind
should extend at least 3" above and 3" below opening or window
molding. For
ceiling-to-floor installations, make adequate allowance for
carpeting. Specifying OB
measurement means the factory makes no deduction allowances.
Patio Doors
To find width:
Measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the
headrail will be
installed to the nearest 1/8". Blind should overlap opening at least
4" on each side to
ensure privacy.
To find length:
Measure the length of the area to be covered and record to the
nearest 1/8". Blind
should extend at least 3" above opening or window molding. For
ceiling-to-floor
installations, deduct 1/2" for proper clearance. Specifying OB
measurement means the
factory makes no deductions allowances. To ensure easy access
through the door and
allow adequate overlap, consider the stack width.
Step 1. Determining Mounting Method
Your blind was made to be installed as either an inside or outside mount.
Follow the instructions that apply to your blind. Unpack your new blind and
check the packaging carefully to assure all parts have been removed before
discarding the shipping containers.
For an Outside Mount: hold the blind level and centered against the window
casing. Mark the casing with a pencil just below the headrail on each end.
Also mark the window casings 1/8" beyond the ends of the headrail. The right and
left installation brackets will be placed on these marks.
Remember to keep headrail level, even if your window is not! Very important for
optimum blinds function.
For an Inside Mount: make sure the headrail is level and clear of obstructions.
Make pencil marks below the headrail on each end.
The right hand and left hand installation brackets will be placed on these
marks. Remember to keep headrail level, even if you window is not.
For a Ceiling or Overhead Mount: hold the blind against the ceiling centered in
front of the window and make pencil marls 1/8" beyond the ends
of the headrail. The right and left installation brackets will be placed on
these marks.
